This was a one hour, after school workshop facilitated by Rape Prevention Education.
The workshop covered…
- A clear definition of sexual violence
- Statistics showing how many young people are affected by sexual violence
- How young people can be supported if they make a disclosure
It also featured some useful videos about consent / dealing with disclosures. The Tea Video was mentioned as a potential resource for discussing consent.
One of the most useful things about the workshop was discussion around how victim blaming can be countered. Discussing how society reacts when someone breaks an arm / is physically hurt (even if they were doing something unwise that resulted in injury) with how victims of sexual violence are judged / re-victimised with students is definitely worth doing.
After the workshop I had a greater awareness of how this issue affects at least some of the students that I teach.
